The workout buddy app where nobody gets to flake

A buddy works because cancelling costs something. Usually that is guilt, and guilt gets cheap by week three. Here is what each kind of app does, and what changes when the cost is money.

Why workout buddies quit in week three

The first cancelled session is free. Someone texts at 6:40am, the other says no worries, and the arrangement survives. The second is easier. By week three the run is optional again, which is where it started. That is not a character flaw, it is a missing penalty: a buddy is a commitment nobody enforces, and friends forgive by design.

If you don’t have a buddy yet

We can’t help there, and saying so beats wasting your click. RunMatch races people you already know, with no matching and no discovery feed. The cheapest way to meet training partners is a local club with a fixed weekly meet, because those people already committed to a time. Our run club guide covers starting one.

The buddy who gets your money when you flake

Pick a friend, a format and a buy-in. Race is first to the distance, Most Miles is the highest total by the deadline, Streak ends when someone misses a day. Winner takes the pot.

RunMatch is free to download and free to race people you know. RunMatch Pro is $9.99 a month and adds one thing: public matches against strangers. We take 0% of the pot and 3% when you withdraw. You need an iPhone and an Apple Watch, and you must be 18 or older. A run with no heart-rate data from the watch is rejected, which is the part that makes a buddy bet worth taking seriously.

Average win on a one-day competition is $21.14, median $10, largest pot so far $740. Nobody quits their job on that. Skipping just stops being free. One limit: the watch only verifies runs, though a solo stake works the same way.

Questions

Can my workout buddy be in another city?
Yes, and most are. You both run wherever you are and the leaderboard settles it, which beats any shared-gym app for long distance.
What happens if we both miss?
In a head-to-head nobody wins and the stakes come back. On a solo stake the money goes to the person you nominated. It never comes to us.
Does it work for couples?
It works for any two people who will actually race each other. A couple is the easiest version, because you can see whether the other one went.

Give your buddy a reason to show up. First mile pays $10.

Race someone you know for a pot. Your Apple Watch settles it and we take 0% of it.
