How to start a run streak, and not break it

One mile a day, every day, no rest days. Here is what each streak length really asks for, where they usually die, and how to make breaking one cost you.

The one-mile rule

A run streak means at least one mile every single day, with no rest days and no rolling it over. That is the common definition and it is deliberately low. The minimum is not the goal, it is the escape hatch that keeps the streak alive on the day you have twenty spare minutes and no legs.

Treadmill counts. Running round the block at 11pm in jeans counts. The streak only cares that you ran.

Thirty days, a hundred, or a year

Pick the length before you start, because an open-ended streak quietly becomes a daily obligation nobody chose. If you are only just coming back from a break, do the six weeks first and start the streak after.

What each streak length actually asks of you, at the one-mile minimum.

Running every day without wrecking yourself

The danger is not the running, it is that a streak removes rest days from a sport that needs them. Make most of it genuinely slow: if a week is 30 miles, at least 25 of them should feel easy enough to talk through.

On the days you feel beaten up, run the minimum mile and stop. Streak runners who get hurt usually did it by treating every day as a training day instead of a one-mile tax.

The days a streak dies

Day 3, day 11 and day 40. The first two are motivation. Day 40 is different: you feel strong, you add miles, and the streak that was keeping you honest starts hurting you.

RunMatch has Streak as one of its three formats, so a group can put a pot on it and one missed day ends your run at it. Your Apple Watch logs the mile and the server rejects any run with no heart-rate data, which means nobody keeps a streak alive from the sofa. Free to race people you know, 0% of the pot, 3% on withdrawal, iPhone and Apple Watch, 18+. RunMatch Pro is $9.99 a month and only adds public matches.

Questions

Does a treadmill mile count?
Yes. The usual rule only asks for the distance, not the surface. RunMatch needs the Apple Watch to record it with heart rate, indoors or out.
What happens if I miss a day?
The streak is over and you start again at day one. That is the whole point of the format: there is no freeze, no skip and no make-up day.
Is a holiday run streak easier?
The short ones that run from Thanksgiving to New Year are popular because the end date is visible from the start. Roughly five weeks is long enough to matter and short enough to survive travel.

Put a pot on day 34. First mile pays $10.

Run the Streak format with friends. One missed day ends it, and your Apple Watch is the referee.
